This Week
Look for one thing
she did for you this week.
You will know it two ways —
it will come as nurture,
and it will point you toward Christ.
That is the whole test.

Why this page is here

She is teaching right now.

Jesus named her job himself, and he named it twice. Both times the word was teach.

She taught the people who never heard her name. She taught through the centuries the record was being altered, and she is teaching this morning, in your kitchen, on your drive, in the middle of the thing you are worried about. Her instruction did not pause while men argued about her pronoun. The record can be edited. The teacher cannot.

So the work in front of you is not to wait for her. It is to recognise her — because instruction you do not recognise as instruction is instruction you do not follow.

On what we call her

Her name is the Holy Spirit. Ima is what you call her at home.

Nothing here replaces the name. She is the Holy Spirit, and that is what she is called — in scripture, in the creeds, in every church that has ever gathered. We are not renaming her. We are doing something smaller and more ordinary: we are learning to speak to her the way a family speaks.

Start with what you already do. God the Father has a formal name and a household name. In Gethsemane, Jesus does not pray to the Father Almighty. He says Abba — the Aramaic a child uses across a kitchen table. He kept both. The title did not go away when the family word arrived; the family word arrived because the title was never meant to be the whole relationship.

“And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee.”

Mark 14 : 36

Now here is the part worth sitting with. Who puts that word in your mouth?

“For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, Abba, Father.”

Romans 8 : 15

“And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.”

Galatians 4 : 6

She is the one who teaches you the family word. She is the reason you can say Abba at all. Paul says it twice, plainly — the cry of Abba is hers, formed in you.

And in the house she built that intimacy for, nobody ever taught us what to call her.

The Household
God — Abba — Father.
The Holy Spirit — Ima — Mother.
The title and the family word, for both.
That is the household Aphrahat described in the year 344, and he did not think he was saying anything daring.

So: keep the name. Say Holy Spirit in the creed, in the pulpit, in the prayer you were taught. And when you are alone, and she has just steadied you over something small that nobody else saw — you have a word for that now. It is the word the earliest Syriac-speaking Christians used without apology, and it is the word this series is named for.

Ima. Our mother. Not instead of the name. Underneath it, where the family lives.

The practice

Two marks, one lesson

Every week, find one. Not ten. One is enough to build the habit, and the habit is the whole point.

Look back over seven days.

Not for miracles. For the ordinary moments — the ones you have been trained to call coincidence, mood, or your own good sense.

Test it against the two marks.

Did it come as nurture — close in, low, meant to steady you rather than shame you? And did it point you toward Christ — toward mercy, honesty, patience, the thing he would have done?

Say it out loud, or write it down.

A lesson you name is a lesson you keep. This is why apprentices are made to repeat the instruction back.

Do the next small thing it asked of you.

Teaching is finished when it is acted on. Make the call. Send the apology. Rest when she said rest.

What it usually looks like

She teaches the way a mother teaches.

Close in, low, and small enough to act on before dinner. The correction that arrived as comfort. The thing you knew to do on Wednesday that nobody told you. The apology you made before you had finished deciding to. The sentence you did not send. The enough for today that landed while the list was still long.

Nobody is made Christlike by announcement. Formation is daily or it is nothing — the way an apprentice is made a journeyman by four years of somebody at his elbow saying not that way, this way, on small things, until his hands know it before his head does. That is the shape of her work, and it is available every single day.

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name — she will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”

John 14 : 26

“For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”

Luke 12 : 12

These are the two verses the Syriac revisers changed. The two where she teaches. You can read the whole account of it, with every source, on the sources page.
